The Sun

http://www.maths.leads.ac.uk/

A. Sunspots are regions of intense magnetic activity where convection is inhibited by strong magnetic fields, reducing energy transport from the hot interior to the surface.(2) A solar flare is a large explosion in the suns atmosphere. A flare is defined as a sudden, rapid, and intense variation in brightness.(1) The solar wind is a stream of charged particles ejected from the upper atmoshere of the sun. It consists mostly of electrons and protons.(1)

B. Auroras are like a solar flare but they are not radioactive.(2) they can be seen by the human eyes and wont hurt you. They are produced by by a solar flare enetering our magnetic field but wont harm us. Solar flare can disrupted our satellite communication because they interfer with the transmition. Which can result to orbital decay. A possiblity that can lead to a power grid disturbance would be a solar flare coming through our atmoshpere and disrupting the electricity and possibly cause a EMP.(3)

C. Nuclear fusion is the process by which multiple like-charged atomic nuclei join together to form a heavier nucleus.(1) Nuclear fusion occurs naturally in stars. Artificial fusion in human enterprises has also been achieved, although has not yet been completely controlled. It takes considerable energy to force nuclei to fuse, even those of the lightest element. High speeds are a big factor in the creation of matter. even the simplest life form is a complex of elements caused by nuclear fusion.(3)

nasa website

I read an article on Gamma Ray astronomy, And I passed the quiz with 100%. I also read an article on Gamma Ray Bursts, but there was no quiz. The article Dark Energy also had no quiz. The last article I read was on Gamma Detectors, and I got 100% on the quiz.

Nasa blog

1. Black Holes- a. Black holes are up to 50 times more massive than our sun. They are possibly powerful enough to slow time in it's vortex and is definitely strong enough to suck in light.
b. Was no quiz, but I feel as though I would have aced it anyway.
c. https://astrophysics.gsfc.nasa.gov/imagineWiki/ResourcesAg#BH

2. Dark Matter- a. Dark matter is the blackness we see in space. It is made up of W.I.M.P.s (Weakly Interactive Massive Particles). They absorb a lot of light so that we can't actually see the matter.
b. Quiz grade: 100%
c. http://cdms.berkeley.edu/Education/DMpages/index.shtml

3. Light Curves- a. Astronomers use light being emitted from an object to measure things like a planet's mass and size.
b. Quiz grade: 75%
c.http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/

4. X-ray telescopes- a. X-ray telescopes can measure energy coming from stars and high-energy emitting objects in space.

Nature Trail

1. Mosquitos-Consumer
2. Red Pines-Producer
3. White Pines-Producer
4. Lady Bugs-Producer
5. Box Elders-Producer
6. Sassafrass-Producer
7. Poison Ivy-Producer
8. Grape Vines-Producer
9. Mushrooms-Decomposer
10. Oak Trees-Producer
11. Maple Trees-Producer
12. Bees-Consumer
13. Stink Bugs-Consumer
14. Golden Finches-Consumer
15. Frogs-Consumer

The nature trail provides a place where people can see their enviroment without human interaction. It also provides something to do in Eaton Rapids (something we have a shortage of). It should be made public and attract attention. The trail should be kept clean regularly.

project update

I thought we did pretty good on our presentation, but we could have done a few things different.
We could of made our hypothesis better and showed more information.

climate changes

I studied Global Dimming and the ozone layer. I found that Global Dimming causes the suns rays to reflect back into space, thus less energy reaches the earth. It hides the power of global warming and causes droughts. The ozone layer is said to be dissapearing. CFC's eat up the ozone and break it into O2 and O1 molecules.
